In a statement issued here, Karunanidhi said Tamils from the Vavuniya region were denied permission to hold a protest for demanding the release of Tamil prisoners of war and also to search for thousands of Tamils lost in the internal war.

“The police prevented the Tamils from Vavuniya from going to Colombo. As a result, the Tamils held their agitation in Vavuiya and gave a petition to an official there,” he said.

Karunanidhi said the action of the Sinhalese majority government in refusing basic democratic rights was condemnable.
