USTM has been started on the Assam-Mehgalaya border, on a hill by AMU alumni Mahbubul Hoque, who is the Chancellor of the university. Prof Aziz had recently visited the USTM campus and was convinced by the efforts of its Chancellor in spreading the message of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan to the north-eastern part of the country and hence accepted the offer.

Speaking to TCN, Mahbubul Hoque said, “He was earlier hesitant to take the responsibility of a new university and that too in North-east part of the country, as his family did not consider it safe enough.” Hoque, however, convinced both him and his family, by personally visiting his home in Kerala.

The university of Science and Technology, Meghalaya has been established under the provision of the University of Science and technology, Meghalaya Act 2008 in more than 400 acres picturesque landscape surrounded by greenery on the Assam-Meghalaya Border, and on few kilometers drive from Guwahati.

Although the ERD Foundation, that runs this university and several other schools and colleges, is facing financial hurdles, Prof Abdul Aziz has assured him to support in all respect to make the University one of the reputed universities in the country.

In this regard a vision plan is also being prepared for the next 5 years including establishment of a Medical College under USTM.
