Chennai : About 120 students belonging to 16 educational institutions will participate in a solar lamp workshop in an engineering college here to learn basics of its technology, an official said.
The students will participate in the solar lamp workshop and competition to learn basics of solar energy, electronics, circuit design and also to design and make solar lamps, the official added.
“The workshop is the first of its kind in India for students. The response to the workshop is very much encouraging,” said Vineeth Vijayaraghavan of Solarillion, an NGO holding the workshop jointly with The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) SIGHT.
The solar lamp workshop will be held at SRM Easwari Engineering College located here.
According to Vijayaraghavan, the teams participating in the workshop will be given two weeks to further work on designing and developing a solar lamp model and participate in the solar lamp design contest.
He said solar energy has garnered a lot of attention in recent times with the launch of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission and states like Tamil Nadu are moving towards solar power in a big way.
“Being a very recent technology, there has been need to focus on educating the students in engineering colleges through hands on workshops to prepare them for the so called green collar jobs that India is expected to generate,” Vijayaraghavan said.
“Students require to be exposed to solar energy technology, as the industry and market seem to be getting ready for what one may term as the second Green Revolution which will be driven by renewable (energy),” Ramesh Rajesh the other co-founder of Solarillion said.
