The city received 4.3 mm of rainfall till 8.30 p.m. Thursday, the Met office said.

The days’ maximum temperature was two notches above average at 33.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was two notches below average at 16 degrees Celsius.

In a sudden change, clouds gathered in the evening sky, and rain followed with a thunderstorm around 6 p.m.. A few areas in east Delhi witnessed hail.

The rain caused traffic snarls, with roads to the satellite towns of Gurgaon and Noida seeing long pile-ups of traffic.

Long lines at traffic signals were also witnessed in areas of west Delhi, near the heavily populated Patel Nagar and Shadipur.

“I was caught off guard by the sudden rain when I was on my way from Gurgaon to Delhi. There was a long jam on the toll road, but the change in weather is welcome,” said Shahid Siddiqui, on his way home from work.

The weatherman forecast sporadic rainfall on Friday as well.

“The sky will be partly cloudy Friday. Rainfall and thundery developments will occur in some areas,” said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.

The IMD attributed the rain to western disturbances, accompanied by low pressure over Rajasthan.

“A western disturbance is there, and a low pressure area has developed over Rajasthan. Enough moisture is being supplied from the Arabian Sea due to the low pressure, and cloud development has occurred over all of north-west India,” the official said.
