83 workers buried in Tibet landslide

Lhasa : As many as 83 workers were buried alive Friday when a major landslide hit a mining area in China’s Tibet region, authorities said.

The accident occurred at about 6 a.m. in the capital Lhasa’s Maizhokunggar county, Xinhua reported.

The affected area of the landslide, caused by natural disasters, is spread over three kilometres, with about 2 million cubic metres of mud, rock and debris, said an official of the local government.

Over 1,000 rescuers, including police, firefighters and medical personnel, were working at the site, located at an altitude of 4,600 metres.
