Gauhati HC issues notice to education department and school over hijab in Assam

Guwahati: Gauhati High Court on Tuesday issued showcase notice to the school management and the principal of Kristo Jyoti School, Bokakhat in Golaghat district following the hearing of the writ petition filed by advocate Jayanta Kumar Goswami on behalf of the parents of a girl who was banned from coming to school wearing a hijab (scarf) last month.

Fathima Beebi, a four year old Nursery student was served notice by the school authority to remove the hijab which she wears around her head or to stop from coming to school anymore on March 28 this year. Following the incident the parents — Shanamon AR and Alee Ahmed had approached the court seeking justice for their daughter.

“The court which has given four weeks of time to reply also served notices to the education department of Assam government and Board of Secondary Education, Assam,” advocate Goswami told TwoCircles.net on Tuesday.

Father Jose Verghese, principal of the school had said that the hijab was violating the school norms inside the campus. The father of the four year old girl Shanamon AR who hails from Kerala questioned the step taken by the school authority as unconstitutional in India. The girl was admitted in the school in the month of November in 2012.
