Hanoi : At least nine people were killed and 76 injured as Typhoon Nari hit Vietnam’s central coastal provinces, reported a government agency Thursday.
The storm destroyed more than 500 houses and damaged about 12,000 others in Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces, according to the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention.
Property loss is estimated to reach $71 million, reports Xinhua.
Rainfall ranging between 200mm to 400mm was recorded in the central Quang Binh, Quang Ngai provinces, and in the central highlands region. As a result, water level in many rivers has increased, causing floods in low-lying areas.
Many reservoirs are now at risk of overflow, said the report.
Typhoon Nari made a landfall to Vietnam’s central coastal provinces Monday, and devastated Da Nang city, officials said.
