New Delhi : Polling on 349 constituencies so far in the 2014 general elections has risen by close to 10 percent as compared to 2009 election, the Election Commission said Thursday.
“Till now polling has been completed on 349 seats which have registered 66 percent voting. In comparison, the figure in 2009 for the same seats was 57.53 percent,” Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Sinha told reporters here.
Sinha further said that polling was “largely peaceful, barring few stray incidents”.
Barring the Kashmir Valley, millions voted Thursday across the country in 11 states and union territory of Puducherry to elect 117 MPs.
Of the 12 states that voted, only West Bengal saw a drop in the voting percentage– from 83.95 percent in 2009 to 82 percent in 2014.
With Thursday’s round of balloting — three more are to take place, and the results will be declared May 16, the Lok Sabha election has ended in seven states.
