Srinagar court orders arrest of accused minister

    Srinagar : A court Saturday here issued an arrest warrant against former Kashmir health minister Shabir Ahmad Khan, accused in a sexual assault case.

    A senior police officer said, “We have obtained an arrest warrant from the chief judicial magistrate Srinagar against Shabir Ahmad Khan, a former minister, accused in case FIR number 10/2014 of Shaheed Gunj police station.”

    The officer said a police team has been despatched to make the arrest.

    Police sources said the team would initially go to Jammu and, if needed, outside the state.

    Khan is accused of sexually assaulting a local doctor after he called her to his office Jan 28.

    Police registered the FIR against Khan on the directions of the chief judicial magistrate Srinagar under sections 509 and 354 of the Ranbir penal code Feb 6.

    If proven guilty, the accused can be imprisoned for a period of two years.

    On Friday, Khan resigned from the Jammu and Kashmir council of ministers. His resignation was accepted by Governor N.N. Vohra on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recommendation.
