Two killed in Myanmar communal riots, curfew imposed

Yangon : Myanmar authorities Thursday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in six townships in Myanmar’s second largest city Mandalay, after a series of communal riots in the town led to the death of two people and injured 14 others, official sources said.

The curfew was imposed in Mandalay’s townships of Aungmyay Tharzan, Chanaye Tharzan, Mahar Aungmyay, Chanmya Tharzi, Pyigyi Tagon and Amarapura, Xinhua reported.

The curfew, which bans gatherings of more than five people, will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the sources said.

A Buddhist man was killed Wednesday night while a Muslim was killed early Thursday morning, the sources said.

The violence started Tuesday night and motor vehicles and shops were destroyed in the rioting. Hundreds of rioters attacked a tea shop, the owner of which was prosecuted in a rape case.

Police have detained four suspected attackers.
