Bezbaruah Committee on safety of NE students visits Jamia

New Delhi: A 12-member delegation led by Mr. M.P. Bezbaruah, Chairman of the committee constituted by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to look into the concerns of the people hailing from North Eastern States, visited Jamia Millia Islamia to have a wide ranging discussion with the students and faculty on the issue.

Interacting with the committee Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia informed them of the institutional arrangements that were in place to address various kinds of concerns of students hailing from North-Eastern States. He conveyed that the offices of the Chief Proctor and Dean, Students’ Welfare and the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia had made adequate arrangements to preclude any discrimination against the students of North-Eastern region. He expressed his willingness to institutionalize academic lectures and modules under the aegis of Academic Staff College relative of orientation programmes for teachers drawn from various universities and colleges. He felt that experts could engage teachers through structured modules.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed his desire to initiate sensitization programmes on the campus to prevent occurrence of any untoward incident. The delegation sought a dedicated space on Jamia’s website linked with Delhi Police portal to highlight various issues and concerns of students from North-Eastern States. The committee sought suggestions from the university in respect of suitable remedial measures against acts of discrimination that could be taken by the Government.

Earlier the Committee interacted with a group of students to get their feedback on issues and concerns.
