London: Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki Thursday confirmed that Syria carried out airstrikes on militants inside Iraqi territory earlier this week, a media report said.
Maliki said that Syrian fighter jets Tuesday bombed militant positions around the border town of Qaim, BBC reported.
Maliki also said that Iraq did not ask Syria for any such raids, but any strikes against the notorious Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) militants are welcome.
The ISIS militants have seized large parts of northern Iraq since early this month, including the second biggest city of the country, Mosul.
Maliki will seek to form a new government in an effort to maintain national unity when the newly-elected parliament assembles July 1 in Baghdad.
