Malaysia’s opposition leader applies for bail

Kuala Lumpur : Opposition leader and former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim Monday deposited 10,000 Malaysian Ringgit (about $3,000) for bail and to suspend his five-year jail term for sodomising his former aide six years ago.

Anwar arrived at the Court of Appeal registry Monday to sign the bail documents, the New Straits Times reported.

Earlier, Anwar’s counsel Ram Karpal Singh filed an appeal against Anwar’s conviction and sentencing by the Court of Appeal March 7.

Anwar was sentenced to five years in jail by a three-judge bench March 7 for sodomising his aide in 2008. The court granted suspension of execution of the sentence with a bail on 10,000 Malaysian Ringgit surety.
