Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal’s statement that ‘Allah will not forgive if BJP wins even a single seat in Assam’ has drew sharp reactions from different corners. Even his own party man has also criticised the perfume baron for his ‘senseless’ statement.

Talking to television reporters Ajmal had said that at any cost BJP has to be stopped winning and if the saffron party manages to win, Allah will not forgive him. BJP slammed Ajmal for allegedly resorting to communal politics and has insisted that Ajmal be either arrested or put under house arrest for trying to bring a division in the society in the name of religion. The saffron party has also decided to approach the Election Commission in this connection and submit a written complaint against Ajmal for violation of the model code of conduct.

“If the Election Commission fails to take action against Ajmal for his alleged communal remarks, the BJP will take recourse to legal action,” BJP state general secretary Santanu Bharali said.

Senior journalist Adip Kumar Phukan, who recently joined the BJP said that fearing of losing the votes, Ajmal has been trying to mislead the people in the name of religion.

“Ajmal is fearful of the BJP because if Narendra Modi forms the government in Delhi, then the religious minorities will be given priority in the state and Ajmal will not be able to take them for granted. Ajmal, who only promotes the interest of his group, is worried if BJP wins maximum seats in the Lok Sabha, then he will not be able to play divisive politics in the state,” said Phukan.

BJP also slammed the AIUDF for not doing any work for the uplift of the minority communities for which the party was formed. “The condition of the minorities in Barpeta and Dhubri is very pathetic. Whatever Ajmal is doing is for promoting the interests of his own business group. Ajmal doesn’t want development for the minorities,” said Phukan.

He also alleged that the Congress and AIUDF have joined hands and they want to exploit the minorities for their narrow political interests. He mentioned that out of the Rs 703.5 crore fund for minority welfare, not even 40% was spent.

All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) has also slammed Ajmal for his behaviour. “Religion is a very personal thing and it should not be used to garner votes playing with the sentiments of the ordinary people. This is a worst scenario anyone can expect in a democracy. Why does not he tell of the things of development and education?” said AAMSU general secretary Rejaul Sarkar Karim.
