Indian farmer abducted by Bangladeshi nationals

Agartala : Tension erupted along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura after Bangladeshi nationals kidnapped an Indian farmer in retaliation to the arrest of a Bangladeshi man by BSF troopers, police said Thursday.

“BSF (Border Security Force) jawans during their routine patrolling along India-Bangladesh border at Mohanpur (western Tripura) Wednesday detained Bangladeshi national Sohel Mia, 42, along with a cow. He was later handed over to Tripura police,” a police official said.

“In retaliation to the arrest of Sohel Mia, Bangladeshi nationals kidnapped Rajkumar Sharma, 45, while he was returning from his paddy field Wednesday evening. He was dragged in deep inside the Bangladesh village,” he added.

Senior BSF and police officials have rushed to the spot, 35 km north of here, as tension is prevailing in and around the Mohanpur area.

The BSF officials Thursday held a flag meeting with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials to resolve the issue.

The BSF officials said they have tightened their border vigil after recent incidents of border crimes.

Since April 6, seven Bangladeshi cattle thieves have been lynched by irate mobs in Tripura in three separate incidents. Tripura Police handed over the bodies to the Bangladesh police later.
