Data dissemination workshop held at AMU

Aligarh: Even when some positive trends have emerged over the years on the literacy rate and mortality rate for Uttar Pradesh, the overall declining trend in sex-ratio of the state is an area of concern and it is for the sociologists to find out what has gone wrong in the society, said A K Rai, assistant director, Directorate of Census Operations, Uttar Pradesh while referring to the Census of 2011 data.

For instance, with 882 females per 1000 males, the sex ratio of Aligarh district is less than the average sex ratio of UP, which is 912 females per 1000 males. Also, Aligarh district ranks 41st in Uttar Pradesh with a literacy rate of 67.5 per cent which is slightly lower than the average literacy rate of 67.7 per cent for the state, a release said here.

With a population density of 1007 persons per sq km, the population density of Aligarh is above the UP state average of 829 persons per sq km, Pradeep Kumar, Joint Director, Controlling Officer and Assistant Registrar General (CRS), Directorate of Census Operations, UP said while delivering the key note to the academics and research scholars at the ‘One-Day Data Dissemination Workshop on Census-2011’ here today.

The workshop was organized with an aim to spread awareness about the application of Census Data for effective policy planning, academic pursuits, research and better governance by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in collaboration with the Directorate of Census Operation, Uttar Pradesh, Government of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs.

Addressing the conference, chairman, Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Professor Qazi Mazhar Ali pointed out that the University’s Statistics Department has conducted researches which have helped the government agencies working on social, political and scientific problems.

Professor Masher Raza, Dean Faculty of Science said there is a need to disseminate the benefits of this conference in the society so that all stakeholders who may include students, scholars, researchers, policy planners, economists, bureaucracy and Government, could get benefitted by utilizing the rich data provided by census in their respective fields for better results and overall growth and development.

Rai also informed that India is the only country in the world which has census data available since 1872 in digitized form. Around 17 district officers including ADM Finance BK Singh, 25 Professors and 45 Research Scholar of eight departments were present on the occasion, the release added.
