Toronto: Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association, Canada organized its first international mushaira in Greater Toronto Area on Sunday, August 24, 2014.
Attended by about 300 Urdu lovers including Aligarians, it was held at a magnificent venue, well suited to a grand literary environment. Twelve poets recited their kalam in their own unique style. The biggest attraction was the two internationally renowned poets, Manzar Bhopali and Iqbal Ashhar, who are currently on a 5 weeks tour of Canada and United States.
Their ghazals and Qatas enthralled the audience and kept them spell bound. The audiences were glued to their chair till their last ghazals. The audience compelled the Mushaira Sadar to call the guest poets for the second round. Both the poets were given standing ovation and the hall was filled with claps to applaud the overall literary performance of these two great poets.
The consul Generals of India and Pakistan were the guest of honour and the famous poet and Urdu writer, Dr. Taqi Abedi presided over the Mushaira.
The local prominent poets who also recited their kalam were Taqi Abidi, Zakia Ghazal, Zamin Jaffri, Munif Ashar, Afzal imam, Muslim Hasani, Nasreen Syed, Darakhshan Siddiqui, Asar Akbarabadi (Ansar Qureshi) and Nazim kazmi.
Attendees appreciated the event so much that they took promise from the Executive Committee members to organize more literary events in future under AMUAA banner.
