New Delhi: Delhi Police has finally imposed curfew and ordered to shoot any miscreant on the spot in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri locality, after communal tension erupted in the locality. Although the crowd has been dispersed now, the situation is still very tense after stone pelting between members of two communities.
Four people were shot at during a clash between two communities over a petty issue in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri area, police said, adding that 33 people have been arrested. Earlier, police said ten people were arrested Friday and 23 on Saturday for rioting in the area.
Communal tensions have erupted in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area since last night. According to reports, Block Number 15 and 27 ( both are adjacent) of Trilokpuri area gripped in communal tension since last night purportedly after local Muslims demanded that a make-shift Mata Ki Chouki that was put up for 9 days in front of a Mosque be removed.
Locals complained that in a clear attempt to instigate Muslims, Hindu group had put up the Mata Ki Chouki right in front of the Mosque. Further they did not immerse the deities even after the Deewali festival was over.
When the locals objected on Friday night and urged them to remove the deities, hundreds of frenzy mob soon gathered and in no time stone pelting began from both sides. The situation was, however, soon taken under control by police. There were reports of clashes even on Thursday.
Locals have also accused the former BJP MLA of Trilokpuri, Sunil Kumar Vaidya of fanning tension by allegedly saying that they will build a temple there. This, however, could not be confirmed immediately.
The situation on Saturday became very tense in the area as about 400-500 outsiders had reportedly gathered outside pockets of Muslims’ homes and started pelting stones and instigating them. They even used abusive languages and shouted slogans calling them traitors and terrorists.
Frantic locals called police and everyone they could as they saw the mob carrying arms, lathis, etc. At around 4.0 pm gun shots were also heard.
“Four persons were reportedly injured by gun shots but these were not fired by police. We are trying to identify who were behind the firing,” a police officer told the news agency IANS.
Before, Eid ul Adha too there was communal tension in the Bawana area of North-West Delhi after some anti-social elements are continuously trying to instigate Hindu-Muslim violence.
Police, Rapid Action Force and Central Reserve Police Force personnel have been deployed in the area. Joint Commissioner of Police is on rounds in the locality as this report is being filed.
Local observers noted that Dalits have been made to turn against Muslims in an attempt at polarisation. There is still palpable fear in the locality of an imminent attack at night.
