New Delhi : CBI Director Ranjit Sinha Friday filed in the Supreme Court his response to the allegations that he had met accused in 2G cases being probed by the investigating agency at his residence during a period of 15 months from May 2013 to August this year.
The response to the allegation by NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) that Sinha met accused was submitted in a sealed cover to the court registry.
A bench of Chief Justice designate Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice S.A.Bobde Sep 8 had asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director to respond to the averments by the NGO within a week.
The matter will come up for hearing on Sep 15.
The court, while asking Sinha to reply to CPIL’s charge, had observed: “The averments are very serious. We want a fair trial. We are monitoring the trial. If we feel that there is a derailment of the case, then we’ll have to deal with it.”
CPIL had urged the court to restrain Sinha and ensure he stays away from the investigation into 2G scam cases and their trial by the special court that is holding day to day hearing of the matter.
The court Sep 8 had taken into its custody the an “original copy” of the entry register, maintained at the residence of Sinha, showing accused in 2G and other cases being probed by the agency were visiting the residence of CBI director.
The entry register was handed over to the court by CPIL counsel Prashant Bhushan who had described it as an “original copy” of the entry register.
Bhushan had then told the court that some people who declined to identify themselves, came to his residence Sep 7 night and left the entry register that was being maintained 2 Janpath residence of the CBI director. He said that these people feared that entry register may not be destroyed.
