New Delhi : Over 1.3 crore people are eligible to vote in the upcoming polls to the Delhi assembly, the Election Commission said here Monday.
The national capital, which has 70 assembly seats, is likely to go to polls in February.
The poll panel said 1,59,854 new voters were added to the electoral list, taking the total to 1,30,85,251.
“Of the total, 72,60,633 are male voters while 58,24,618 are females,” Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi said.
He was speaking to reporters after the final electoral rolls of Delhi were published Monday.
In the last assembly polls in December 2013, there were 1.19 crore voters while during the 2014 Lok sabha polls the number of voters was 1.27 crore.
The Election Commission between Oct 15 and Nov 10 last year received fresh applications and requests for corrections in the existing voter ID cards.
“During this period, we received over two lakh application out of which around 1.5 lakh were filed online,” Bhushan said.
As per the recent electoral rolls, assembly constituency-34, Matiala in West Delhi, has the highest number of electors with 3,39,686 voters while AC-20 Chandni Chowk has the lowest electorate with 1,12,739 voters.
Bhushan said the Election Commission will start the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme and, through its various media platforms, make people aware and urge them to exercise their voting right in the upcoming assembly polls.
“Currently, there are 11,763 polling booths in 2,527 polling locations in the national capital,” Bhushan told IANS.
Voter turnout in the last Delhi assembly polls, held in December 2013, was 65.6 percent while the voter turnout in the Lok Sabha polls in Delhi, in April last year, was 65.07 percent.
Bhushan said the gender ratio after the final publication of electoral rolls was 802.
“Also the Electorate Population (EP) ratio in the final electoral roll was 70.02 percent,” Bhushan said adding that a total of 1,72,450 voters in the age group of 18-19 will vote for the first time.
Bhushan also said that during the revision, a total of 89,156 multiple entries and 1,20,605 image duplication cases were detected by booth-level officers during a special “IT-enabled application and field verification” process to identify bogus electors.
