Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union has condemned the appointment of “tainted” BJP MPs to AMU Court by the Narendra Modi government.
“The Central Government’s decision to appoint Kunwar Bharatendra, a BJP MP and accused in Muzaffarnagar riots, is a slap in the face of the entire Alig fraternity,” a press statement by the Students’ Union said.
“AMU is an institution of national importance and a revered seat of higher learning that has always cherished the values of harmonious coexistence and brotherhood. Moreover, the entire Alig fraternity had stood by the people of Muzaffarnagar in the time of their suffering and we continue to do so today. The appointment of a man who was arrested for instigating rioting in Muzaffarnagar in October 2013 to our highest decision making body, the AMU Court, is an affront to our longstanding values and traditions,” the statement further said.
Along with Kunwar bharatendra, BJP MPs Satish Gautam and Rajveer Singh, who all have a proven track record of playing the politics of hate and division, have also been made members of AMU Court.
“It is inexplicable why these particular parliamentarians were made members of an educational institution of national importance when they have displayed no previous interest in issues of higher education or academics,” they noted.
The AMU Students’ Union believes that this step has been taken with the sole purpose of creating communal tension in AMU and disturbing our academic atmosphere.
Earlier, some civil rights activists and academicians wrote to the President urging him to intervene in the matter.
