Guwahati: Attending Iftaar at one of the city’s oldest mosque – Burha Jamme Masjid – on Monday, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi announced that a forum will be formed comprising leaders of all religions to bridge the gap among the different religions in the state.
‘Problems are created due to misunderstandings among ourselves which we need to address for the greater interest of the society. When the gap among the people is increased, a number of problems rise. A truly religious person always advocates for peace. We are also thinking of a common forum with representatives of all the religion to increase the brotherhood in the society among all the sections,” Gogoi said.
He said that Assam is land with several examples of communal harmony and brotherhood. “We have Sankardev, Madhabdev and also Ajan Fakir who spread the message of peace and brotherhood. We should follow their footsteps for better tomorrow,” said Gogoi.
Sankardev was a saint and social reformer who advocated for communal harmony and brotherhood in Assam among different religions. Ajan Fakir was a poet, Muslim preacher and a saint in the 17th century who came from Baghdad and settled in Assam’s Sivasagar. These great figures played a major role to unify the people of the state.
CM Gogoi further said that it was a great feeling to be a part of the sacred occasion in one of the oldest mosques in the city. The Iftaar party was also attended by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Anjan Dutta and some senior Congress leaders besides others.
A special prayer was also conducted on the occasion where people prayed for peace and prosperity. Gogoi also announced Rs 20 lakh for the development of Jamme Masjid.
“We want peace to prevail in our state. By organizing this Iftaar, we prayed for peace and prosperity for all,” said Dutta.
