Ajmer, Rajasthan: Lambasting the fundamentalist for deliberately spreading false information about the International Day of Yoga, Syed Zainul Aabedin Ali Khan, the Sajjada Nasheen at the dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti here, has asserted that yoga is an important physical exercise and not part of any religious ritual.

He has also appealed India’s Muslims to be part of International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21 in large numbers.

Ever since the announcement was made and government of India started preparations, a number of Muslim organisations have opposed the move as they object to “surya-namaskar” as worship to Sun not accepted according to the Islamic teachings.

“Linking this with namaz or any other religious act is absolutely wrong. The fundamentalists are conspiring to create problems between different communities by deliberately spreading false rumours about yoga,” Ali Khan said in a statement here.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi handing over the "Chaadar" to be offered at Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Ajmer Sharif, to the Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, in New Delhi on April 21, 2015.
PM Narendra Modi’s sent a Chadar for this year’s Urs in Ajmer.

On the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative, United Nations and countries across the world are set to observe the International Day of Yoga on June 21, which is a “matter of honour for India”, he said, adding, “We welcome the Prime Minister’s decision to remove Surya Namaskar from the list of Yoga asanas. With this step, the Prime Minister has, while showing respect for all religions, hit upon the fundamentalists, who are hell bent on disturbing the communal harmony in the country. Yoga has nothing to do with religion or religious rituals. This is an ancient Indian system of physical exercise.”

Moreover, research has proved that yoga can cure complicated ailments such as diabetes, asthma and heart problems without any external medicines. “Modern medical sciences, even with the help of advanced medicines and techniques, gives no guarantee of keeping in control or getting rid of these ailments. Yoga promises this because it helps one maintain balance with one’s resistance capacity. This proves most useful in day-to-day hustle-bustle of modern lifestyle,” the release said.

“Government of India has started preparations on large scale for celebrating the International Day of Yoga on June 21. It is also aiming at the Guinness World Record when a whole lot of people perform yoga exercises together. In such a scenario, we appeal to Indian Muslims to participate in large numbers in these celebrations and not fall prey to fundamentalists’ designs,” the Sajada Nasheen said.

“The Prime Minister has removed the controversial Surya Namaskar from the yoga list. Muslims should now participate in the celebrations and offer an example on the global level,” he asserted.
