Who hath appointed the earth a resting-place for you, and the sky a canopy; and causeth water to pour down from the sky, thereby producing fruits as food for you. And do not set up rivals to Allah when ye know (better). [Surah Baqrah: 22]

First of Ramadan started at sundown on Thursday in India, a day that witnessed 60mm of rainfall in Mumbai within a period of 12 hours. Subways got flooded and traffic crawled in waterlogged streets. Meanwhile in Haji Ali Dargah frequent-visitors Naqvi sisters welcomed the monsoon with open arms and smiling faces. Nothing, according to them, is more exciting than a trip here in the monsoon. On heavy rainy days like today, when an extended heavy downpour is combined with extreme high tide, the causeway that leads to the Dargah gets completely submerged. Until the tide goes down, the Dargah becomes an islet of its own, inaccessible and oblivious to the chaos of Bombay. A regular half-hour visit becomes three or four hours of quality time, spent with the family.
