Formula racing car created by AMU B Tech students is ‘Most Popular Car’

Aligarh: A Formula racing car created by a team of Aligarh Muslim University’s B Tech (mechanical engineering) students has won the ‘Most Popular Car’ and was ranked 19th in the ‘Formula Student India’ 2015 held at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

The Society of Automotive Engineering, Z H College of Engineering and Technology (SAE ZHCET) team, which won accolades for AMU, was led by Arpit Upadhay and had 25 members.

Team Captain Arpit Upadhay who is a third-year B Tech (Mechanical Engineering) student pointed out that in the previous ‘Formula Student India’ event, the AMU team was ranked 60th. “But this year, we made a leap from 60 to the 19th rank and we hope to reach top five in the 2016 event of Formula Student India,” said Upadhyay.

He also pointed out that the Formula Car designed and fabricated by his team has also secured 19th rank in overall competition out of 80 International teams.

Arpit and his team’s creation, the Formula Car, which won the honours in Coimbatore, has a special front attack innovator, a digital RPM indicator and a modified Honda CBR 250 engine.

While felicitating the students for the achievement, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (retd), AMU vice chancellor, said, “I am glad that this team of students have introduced something new. Innovations come with crazier ideas. Something good comes out of crazy and wonderful ideas. I am proud that our students are capable of innovating new things.”

While urging the students to keep the processing of these ideas going, General Shah announced a cash reward of Rs 1,000 to each student in the SAE ZHCET team.

Encouraging the students for the hard work in creating and designing the Formula Car, Professor Arif Suhail, the chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering, said, “We used to advise these students not to work in late hours. However, these 25 members of SAE ZHCET kept their determination and worked rigorously to create and design this car. Today they have made us all proud.”

The students in the SAE ZHCET team will be traveling overseas with their creations to represent AMU, said Faculty Advisor, SAE ZHCET, Dr Nafees Ahmad- II.
