10 injured in post-poll clashes in Bangladesh

Dhaka : At least 10 people, including three policemen, were injured in Chittagong district of Bangladesh as supporters of a former councillor and a councillor-elect clashed for area dominance on Thursday.

Supporters of councillor-elect Shahed Iqbal Babu and former councillor Farid Ahamad Chowdhury clashed with sharp weapons and firearms around Thursday noon.

Locals say several groups of ruling Awami League have been at loggerheads over the control of the Shershah area. They worked for separate candidates in the April 28 polls, bdnews24.com reported.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of North Chittagong Shariful Islam identified the injured policemen as sub-inspector Md. Sayem, constables Md. Manik Mia and Sanjit Chowdhury.

They have been admitted to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) with bullet wounds.

CMCH police outpost Nayek Md. Hamid said the policemen were shot in the hands and legs.

Ruling Awami League-endorsed mayor candidates won Tuesday’s elections in Dhaka and Chittagong city corporations.
