Contesting for the first time for Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) elections in Maharashtra, MIM on Monday won four seats out of total 122 member civic body. In its maiden entry to UP also, it won four gram panchayats in Uttar Pradesh.

In KDMC polls, Tanzila Ayaz Maulvi won from Gowind Wadi Ward no 34, Kalim Balamiya Shaikh from Netivali Tekdi Ward no 44. Independent candidates Shakeela Khan and Khasib Tanki who were supported by MIM also won. Sources within the party say the two could not be given the party symbol due to some technical problems, and had to contest as independents.

IN UP< the party won one gram panchayat each in Muzaffarnagar and Azamgarh and two in Balrampur district of UP. In Muzaffarnagar, Nitrapal Singh Bodh and in Azamgarh, Kailash Kumar Gautham won. Both these candidates belong to the Scheduled Castes (SCs). Naseema Khan and Mohd Tahir Khan won in Balrampur district. This is a major boost for Asaduddin Owaisi who is eyen 2017 assembly polls in UP considering the fact that his party could win from Mulayam Singh’s constituency, Azamgarh. Seemingly, one of the main reasons for success of MIM across the country is the calculative approach of its president Asaduddin Owaisi that is evident from the fact that unlike the Left, BSP or RPI, the Hyderabad-based outfit does not contest from all seats but selects few seats from where it assumes can find support. This is how MIM has maintained its winning streak in motion ever since it won two assembly seats in Maharashtra in 2014. After winning two assembly seats in Maharashtra, it won 26 seats in Aurangabad Municipal Corporation and emerged as the largest opposition party. The next milestone for the party will be in Maharashtra, where it will contest in all-important Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in 2017.
