Moscow: Russia urged the United Nations (UN) to play a more active role in solving European refugee crisis.
The problem could not be solved without united efforts, without the more active involvement of the UN and its agencies, Xinhua news agency reported Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov as saying on Tuesday.
“New measures must be studied… The EU is failing to solve the refugee problem and there is no common solution,” said Gatilov.
According to him, the UN Security Council resolution on the refugee crisis is almost finalised and could be voted on “within the next two days”.
“All this happened because the national policies pursued by Assad are inconsistent. People are fleeing the war and terrorist activities of IS in Syria,” said Gatilov, criticising western countries for blaming Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the refugee crisis.
People in the Middle East and North African countries are seeking to escape wars and terrorism at home. They have chosen European countries as their destination, leading to a severe refugee crisis in the European continent.
Gatilov urged the international community, especially the US-led anti-IS coalition, to coordinate the anti-terrorism actions with Syrian government.
According to Gatilov, a more realistic and cooperative attitude is expected to affect and change the current US strategy of insisting on the resignation of Syrian President Assad.
