Aligarh: “Promotion of modern education was the core agenda of Sir Syed and he relentlessly worked for empowering the marginalized sections of India with modern scientific knowledge”, said Prof. Asmer Beg, Chairman, department of Political Science while addressing a seminar on “Sir Syed, MAO College and Communal Harmony” organized by the Sarojini Naidu Hall of residence for girls in Aligarh Muslim University.
Prof. Beg said that Sir Syed had understood the root cause of the backwardness of Muslims and was convinced that only English education could be the remedy for this age old social ailment. He even worked against the popular will and did not succumb to the pressure mounted by the religious figures who conveniently brought fatwas against him.
Prof. Yusufuzzaman Khan, Controller of Examination said that Sir Syed visited the Oxford University and wanted to develop the MAO College into Oxford of East. He urged the residents of the Hall to work hard and achieve excellence in order to materialize Sir Syed’s dream.
In her presidential address, Prof. Naeema Gulrez, Principal, Women’s College underlined the importance of education in social development and called for promoting female education to empower this section of society.
Programme Convener, Prof. Shakeel Samdani said that Sir Syed’s mother played a significant role in educating him par excellence. He said that Sir Syed convinced the British government to give Indians adequate representation in governance.
Laying emphasis on ethical empowerment of students, Prof. Seema Hakim, Provost, SN Hall said that Sir Syed gave special importance to character building and it remains as a core constituent of the Aligarh culture.
Literary Incharge of the Hall, Dr. Saba Khan welcomed the guests while Warden, Dr Sadaf Ghani proposed a vote of thanks.
