Khudai Khidmatgar organised workshop on socio-economic and health rights of domestic workers

Delhi unit of Khudai Khidmatgar organised a workshop with domestic workers of Okhla area, to create awareness regarding socio-economic and health rights issues of the workers. The event was organised at Sabka Ghar, Okhla on September 17. The gathering addressed by the young experts who are working for the upliftment of the society.

The speakers were Manisha Bhalla, journalist and activist working on women and labor issues widely, addressed the gathering with the inputs of socio-economic case studies and labor rights that have been provided to unorganised workers as well as the social impact and need of being aware to claim the socio-economic rights from the workplaces. She mentioned that how the laborer’s efforts are made as worthless by getting more work and less pay. They are denied of various facilities like leave, security, beyond the salary issues and so on, she also expressed her views to put collective efforts to claim the welfare board for the domestic workers in Delhi, since there is a large population of domestic workers involved as unorganised labors in Delhi.

Advocate Tahmina Lashkar, Programme Officer of Common Wealth Human Rights Initiative, was also a speaker in the programme. She mentioned with several examples of how easily an ordinary citizen can claim their rights for their better living by using the Right to Information Act (RTI) as their tool, the basic facilities like, dispensary, drinking water, sewage system, toilet facilities etc shared with the domestic workers, by which the domestic workers has now become interested to utilise the tool to claim their rights.

Khudai Khidmatgar NLC Member and Senior Pathologist, Dr. Kush Kumar Singh had an interaction with the workers on health-related issues, the precautionary steps that has to be taken during the work-hours, utilisation of hand gloves while cleaning the floors, handling acids while washing, sitting arrangement while washing the clothes, using hot water during the winter days, and utilising slippers in the working area, head cover at kitchen, to make them and the owners feel safe and hygiene.

Khudai Khidmatgar’s Delhi State Member, Zeba Fathima present at that occasion and gave hope to the workers that she may interact with the local community to make the community and workers friendly for making a good faith among both the side which can minimize the possibilities of violation.

Khudai Khidmatgar Members Bilal Kagzi, Parwez Alam, Mohammed Jawed, Suyesh Tripathi, Sahil Ahmed and Sharik Chaudhry were also present at this occasion.
