Aligarh: If you are a researcher looking for a list of relevant citations, books, articles and documents on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, your painstaking work and attention to detail and integrity can now become easy with Dr Shayesta Khan’s compiled and edited book in two-volumes, ‘Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement: A Bicentenary Bibliography.’

Dr Khan, who works as an Assistant Librarian with the Maulana Azad Library, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has complied a complete list of books and articles written by Sir Syed with rare photographs of first edition title pages. The book is a Sir Syed Bicentenary Celebrations Publication.

“The first volume covers the books written by Sir Syed and the books written on him and the Aligarh Movement in Urdu, Hindi and English, while the second volume has micro information and references of about 6, 000 articles which have appeared in Urdu and English periodicals,” said Dr Khan adding that the second volume also has details of articles from a large number of composite books.

“I am working on a third volume with 9,000 references to micro literature on Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement,” pointed Dr Khan.

Dr Khan further said that her work is an addition to earlier bibliographies, while contributing to the section of books on Sir Syed which are increasing in numbers every year.

Prof A R Kidwai (Chairperson, Sir Syed Bicentenary Celebrations Committee) said that Dr Khan’s work fits in perfectly with the ongoing Sir Syed bicentenary celebrations and in the light of this book, researchers and writers will be equipped better to delve deep into the multifaceted genius of Sir Syed.

Prof Shan Muhammad (Former Chairperson, Department of Political Science and Former Director, Sir Syed Academy) said that ‘Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement: A Bicentenary Bibliography’ is a result of dedication and hard work leading to the availability of a much updated version of bibliography of Sir Syed’s works.

“Dr Khan’s book is a comprehensive, annotated and updated bibliography, which is astutely edited and discerningly compiled,” said Prof Shafey Kidwai (Department of Mass Communications). He added that the bibliography unfailingly provides a comprehensive list of books and articles on Sir Syed and is a must read for those who want to learn about Sir Syed—the seminal figure of the nineteenth century.

In a recent review of the book, Dr M Mohibul Haque (Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, AMU) said that the book not only contains a complete index and contents of Sir Syed’s essays and lectures, but it also provides comprehensive bibliography of articles and books written on Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement in English, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, Malayalam, Turkish, Tamil and Telegu languages.

“Sorting out resources from periodicals published in last two centuries is a daunting task as these resources are often missed by readers and researchers,” said Dr Haque.

Dr Nabi Hasan (Librarian, Maulana Azad Library) said that Dr Khan has a vast experience of editing and compiling reference works and her book will be of immense help for further researches.
