United Nations : The 63rd UN General Assembly, presided over by Nicaraguan diplomat and priest Miguel D” Escoto, officially starts Tuesday an intensive program to extend until 2009.
The UN General Assembly, founded in 1945 by the Charter of this organization, has the participation of 192 member countries that deliberate and adopt measures to be followed with the approval of their members.
D” Escoto, 75, replaces former Macedonia Foreign Minister Srgjan Kerim, who presided over the 62nd period of sessions and was recognized by his efforts in boosting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
Son of a Nicaraguan diplomat, the Maryknol Order priest was a foreign minister of his country in the 1979-1990 Sandinista government, and worked until that moment as adviser of President Daniel Ortega.
This period of sessions, which will hold separate top-level meetings on Africa and the MDG, will also debate international peacekeeping and security, sustainable economic growth and development, human rights and humanitarian assistance.
The development of Africa, disarmament, the promotion of justice, international law, supervision of drugs, prevention of crimes, the struggle against international terrorism in all ways are included on the list.
The debate of the General Assembly will begin next week.
