Washington : The five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany are meeting here to discuss Iran’s failure to cooperate with UN demands that it dismantle its nuclear programme.
The talks could include discussion of another possible set of resolutions against Iran, said US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.
The meeting comes just days before next week’s UN General Assembly debate among heads of state, when US Jewish organizations were planning a major rally Monday against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad outside the United Nations.
Ahmadinejad plans to attend the debate, as he did last year.
The anti-Iran protests have generated a whirl of elections publicity in the US as Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, said she would speak at the rally. Palin was eventually not invited to the rally.
Hillary Clinton, the Democratic senator from New York, had earlier withdrawn from participation because of plans to include Palin.
“There will be no politicians at the rally,” an official at the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in New York told DPA. “We could not have any American politicians because it’s a nonpartisan event.”
The talks on the nuclear crisis in Washington included officials from China, Russia, France, Britain and the US – the five veto-wielding members of the Security Council – plus Germany. The group has come to be called P5 plus one.
