United Nations : Saudi Arabia has called for an urgent ministerial meeting of the Security Council to discuss the Israeli settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian land.
A letter in this regard was sent Monday to the council president, Burkina Faso, by the Saudi Charge d’Affaires Abdullatif Sallam in conformity with the recent Arab League decision announced by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal in Cairo.
The subject was discussed earlier in the day by the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) during their annual meeting attended by Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.
GCC Secretary-General Abdel-Rahman Al-Attia told reporters following the meeting that the issue is “very important” because of the Israeli practices and daily violations of the Palestinian people’s rights.
He welcomed the positive response the GCC got from the UN and the Security Council to hold such a meeting and commended Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Foreign Minister for this initiative.
He expected the meeting to take place in the very near future while a great number of Arab and other foreign ministers are still in New York to attend the 63rd session of the General Assembly.
