“I am a known diabetic since 12 to 13 years. I am doing a lot of work for the diabetics here in India. In November, I will be going to small cities to meet kids so that I can motivate them to lead a normal life and tell them that they only have to adjust their lifestyle a bit – food wise and exercise wise – to lead a normal life,” Akram told IANS.

The cricketer, often referred to as the sultan of swing for his distinct reverse swing style, has recently shot for a consumer awareness advertisement for the Roche Diagnostics’ Accu-Chek Active brand.

“There should be awareness. We have no one in our countries to tell people what diabetes is. Nobody tells anyone. Diabetes gives no pain and unfortunately people only visit the doctor when there is any pain. They need to be told how important is regular monitoring,” he said.

Akram said: “I have a set fitness regime but it goes awry when I am travelling. Otherwise, I keep a check on my food and especially about the oil intake. I try to eat lots of vegetables but it is really difficult in Pakistan because very less vegetables are cooked in the houses there.”

Currently, Akram is co-judging Indian dance reality TV show “Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina” with Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen. The show has paired six cricketers with six TV actresses to burn the dance floor.
