The eyewitnesses feared the other two were also drowned but authorities refused to confirm it. The accident took place around 3.40 p.m.

The eyewitnesses said the devotees had turned up in thousands on the banks of the river and because of the excessive crowd a minor stampede broke out in the areas in and around Timarpur, Burari and Saraswati Vihar. Several people were pushed into deeper waters of the river.

The police and fire brigade officials later managed to pull out the body of a 22-year-old youth identified as Jitendra, who hailed from West Bengal.

The police said they were verifying the number of people who drowned in the river.

“We don’t know if more people have actually fallen or not. Our men are on the job,” said an official from the Delhi Fire Services.

The fire department had stationed five emergency vehicles at various areas on the banks of the Yamuna to prevent any untoward incident. No such incident was reported from any other place along the river in Delhi.
