New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday refused to restrain the Gujarat government from implementing the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission report on the 2002 Godhra train carnage.
Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan said the Nanavati report per se didn’t have any recommendation and the government cannot be restrained from acting on it.
The Justice (retd) G.T. Nanavati report was tabled in the Gujarat assembly Sep 25, more than six years after the horrific burning of coach S6 of Sabarmati Express train in Godhra killed 59 people and triggered Gujarat-wide communal violence. The report concluded that it was no accident but a premeditated crime.
The report contradicts the findings of the U.C. Banerjee panel, set up by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, which unequivocally stated that the fire was accidental.
