New Delhi : Holding the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) responsible for causing inconvenience by simultaneously booking a park for two weddings, a city court slapped a fine of Rs.250,000 on it and pulled it up for causing embarrassment to a bride’s family.
Additional District Judge Kamini Lau asked the MCD to conduct a vigilance enquiry against the officials involved.
L.D.Bansal had booked a park almost two months in advance in Karol Bagh area for his daughter’s marriage Jan 22, 2004. But on enquiry at the site, he found that arrangements were being made for another marriage.
Bansal asked MCD officials to look into the matter but they asked him to look for another venue, he told the court.
To save himself from embarrassment, Bansal made arrangement in the lane of his house and had to shell out an extra Rs.50,000.
“The bride’s father is expected to be attending to the various ceremonies connected with the marriage and to his guests a few hours before the wedding, rather than pleading with the senior officers of the corporation and seeking their intervention to get the site handed over to him.
“Had the wedding been performed at the site, there was no occasion for the father to have rushed to this court to seek damages for an event which could not take place at the site,” the judge noted.
Bansal also had to inform the invitees of the marriage about the change of the venue of the marriage at the last hour. Many invitees could not attend the marriage as they were not informed of the change in venue.
