Baghdad :The Iraqi government has authorised wide-scale military operations in the northern city of Mosul to crack down on militants who have been targeting Iraqi Christians there.
The government reviewed in a meeting Tuesday the “painful” conditions in Mosul, as well as threats and attacks against the Christian citizens which forced them to flee, government spokesman Ali Dabbagh said in a statement.
The government, thus, ordered intensive military and security operations to restore order and security in Mosul, he said.
An investigation was opened to identify the causes of the attacks against the Christians, said Al-Dabbagh, who noted that urgent relief supplies and financial aid would be sent to the Christian families who left their houses.
Hundreds of Iraqi Christians fled their homes fearing attacks by the militants.
Mosul is the second largest Iraqi city with Christian population after Baghdad.
