The delegation of environmentalists and concerned citizens was led by Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. They asked the government to take steps to ensure the purity of the Ganga, control the flow of industrial and domestic pollutants into the river and protect its flow.

The members also asked for the setting up of a Ganga Environment Commission at the national level and for declaring the Ganga as a national river.

Singh told the delegation that he has set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into a river conservation strategy for Ganga and other important rivers.

He assured the team that he would request the GoM to hear their views.
