“It was 8:10 a.m. local time (GMT 0340) when a suicide attacker riding a car full of explosive device blew it up next to a convoy of Italian forces outside Herat airport, diverting an armored personnel carrier from the street and slightly injuring three soldiers were,” Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told Xinhua.
The bomber was also killed in the incident but his identity has yet to be determined, he added.
No officials from NATO and the Italian military were immediately available for comment.
Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, the purported Taliban spokesman, took responsibility for the incident saying that Abdul Rohman, a Taliban fighter from Herat city carried out the suicide attack against Italian troops there killing eight soldiers on spot.
Herat, a relatively peaceful province and center of economic activities in west Afghanistan, has been the scene of militants and criminal gangs as businessmen are often kidnapped for ransom.
