The blast took place near a forested area of Belpahari village, about 250 km from here.

“Three people – doctor Dhaniram Mandi, nurse Bharati Majhi and medical van driver Bapi Mishra – were killed when their vehicle was blown up in a landmine blast around 3 p.m. Wednesday near Belpahari village,” Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told reporters here.

“The only survivor of the blast, a nurse, is in critical condition,” he added.

“It seems that the blast was planned and executed by the Maoists. But we have to complete our investigation before arriving at a definite conclusion. No one has been arrested so far,” he said.

According to a police source, the medical van, with a doctor and two nurses, was going to Belpahari Health Centre from the adjoining Kishori village.

“Mandi and Majhi were residents of Belpahari, while Mishra was a resident of Puruliya town,” the police source said.
