“As president, I will end this war by asking the Iraqi government to step up, and finally finish the fight against bin Laden and the al- Qaeda terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.”

Obama at times seemed to vacillate between preparing the crowd for his presidency — “It’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be quick” to turn things around, he said — and worrying about overconfidence among his supporters.

The two men seeking to become president of the United States have begun a hectic series of campaign rallies with three days left before polling day.

Democrat Barack Obama still holds a lead in polls, but one survey suggests Republican John McCain is moving up.

Campaigning in Virginia, Mr McCain told voters: “We can and will win”.

He also appeared in Pennsylvania and on the TV comedy show Saturday Night Live.

In Nevada, Mr Obama told voters they had “three days to turn the page”.

The Illinois senator, who is also campaigning in Colorado and bellwether state Missouri, warned against the dangers of complacency and urged supporters to make sure they voted.

“Don’t believe for a second that this election is over,” he told a crowd of some 15,000 in Henderson, Nevada.

“But I know this, Nevada, the time for change has come. We have a righteous wind at our back.”

Both candidates are visiting states seen as crucial to their chances of winning Tuesday’s election.
