Bangladesh: foreign poll observers start contacting with EC

Dhaka, Bangladesh : Representatives of foreign poll observers and missions have started contacting with the Election Commission (EC) for the upcoming ninth parliamentary elections.

Pavan Kapoor, head, Asia of Europe Region of Political Affairs Division of Commonwealth Secretariat and head of its Democracy Section met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda at his office here on Sunday.

Talking to BSS, Pavan Kapoor said that various issues including the state of emergency were discussed in the meeting. The Commonwealth will send its observer team two weeks ahead of the elections, he said.

Public Relations Officer of the EC SM Asaduzzaman appraised the delegation about various policies formulated by the EC and whole range of information relating to the forthcoming polls.

Earlier, mission director of Asian Network For Free Election (ANFREL) Ichal Supriadi and assistant director Pongsak Cha-On contacted with the EC’s Public Relations unit.

The EC sources said that a long-time observer team of the ANFREL now staying in Bangladesh.

The EC has prepared the list of a local observer team for registering with the EC and the list will be sent to the newspapers for publication, said the sources.
