Congress, BJP heavyweights file nominations for Delhi polls

New Delhi : The beating of drums and slogan shouting were the order of the day as supporters on motorbikes and in cars Monday accompanied Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavyweights who filed their nominations for the Nov 29 Delhi assembly polls.

Most of the principal leaders of the Congress and the BJP Monday filed their nominations Monday on the penultimate day of the process.

According to the office of Delhi’s chief electoral officer, “186 nominations were filed Monday at six districts of the capital.”

From the Congress camp, the main politicians who filed their nominations Monday were Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Finance Minister A.K. Walia, Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf, apart from legislators Kiran Walia and Barkha Singh.

The main BJP leaders who filed their nomination Monday were Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan, as also Rambhaj and Praveen Khandelwal.

A huge traffic jam ensued near the deputy commissioner’s office on Shahjahan Road in the New Delhi constituency as supporters of candidates flocked to the area. Dikshit beat the rush by filing her nomination in the morning itself.
