New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday issued a notice to Tamil Nadu’s chief Secretary and director general of police (DGP), asking them to submit a report on Wednesday’s violence at a law college where the police allegedly remained mute spectators, an official said.
“The commission has given the chief secretary and the DGP of Tamil Nadu four weeks time to submit their report on Wednesday’s incident when a student was allegedly beaten up by more than 20 others by dangerous weapons in the presence of police officials,” an NHRC official told IANS.
The violent incident, which took place in the Dr. Ambedkar Law College, saw students of the college fighting pitched battles over the contents of an invitation for a political event, attacking each other with sticks and iron rods.
Three students were injured in the clashes and were said to be in serious condition at a hospital.
“The commission issued the notice based on a complaint filed by a Chennai based NGO, World Human Rights Commission and Rescue Centre, alleging that despite media reporters requesting them to protect the students, the police officials present at the site of the incident failed to respond,” the official said.
