Berlin : America’s Ambassador to Germany William Timken has rejected worldwide accusations that his country has caused the global financial crisis, the daily Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported Tuesday.
“Whoever says America is responsible for everything ignores the facts,” he was quoted saying according to the German-language transcript of the interview.
Although the real estate bubble was created in the US but bubbles of such kind have repeatedly taken place around the world, the US diplomat added.
Mutual finger-pointing will not help, Timken stressed.
The US envoy’s remarks are in stark contrast to statements by international economic analysts who have said that the American subprime mortgage crisis and the subsequent banking turbulence have triggered the world’s worst economic crisis since the Great Depression of 1929.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeatedly lambasted the US for not sufficiently supporting European plans for more transparency on the international financial markets as well as rating agencies and hedge funds.
