Aizawl : The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the main opposition Congress in Mizoram exuded confidence of forming the next government in the state as polling to the state legislative asembly ended Tuesday with a turnout of at least 75 percent.
“The exact poll percentage could be available on Wednesday after we compile reports from all stations,” said Lalhmingthanga, the joint chief electoral officer. “Polling ended peacefully across the state,” he added.
“We shall comfortably get the magic figure of 21 and our vote share would increase substantially,” said Mizoram Congress chief Lalthanhawla.
“If voted to power, our main agenda would be to uplift the poor in the state and develop the basic infrastructure,” the Congress leader told reporters after casting his vote at a polling station in the capital city Aizawl.
“The Congress is not fighting the MNF, but the misrule and rampant corruption in the state,” the three-time chief minister added.
The MNF, ruling the state for the past ten years, is equally confident of winning the election for the third straight term.
“We have no doubt that the MNF would get absolute majority,” Chief Minister Zoramthanga said.
He told IANS by phone from Champhai in southern Mizoram: “The mood of the voters was in favour of the MNF as the party had provided them all basic services for the past ten years.”
An estimated 611,124 voters, including 308,884 women, were eligible to cast their votes for the 40-member state legislature for which voting was held Tuesday.
Results are expected Dec 8.
