The incident took place when Sumanta Dana, his wife Sarada, seven-year-old Sangita and one-year-old Sohini were going to a relative’s house late Wednesday evening in West Bengal’s Burdwan town, about 140 km from here.

Dana had stopped his motor-cycle to attend a mobile phone call when a speeding sand-laden truck hit them from the back.

“As soon as the truck hit the two-wheeler, Sohini was jerked off and fell from Sarada’s arms into a nearby bush while her parents and elder sister were crushed to death,” the officer said.

He said: “The police were removing the three bodies when one of the officers heard a baby crying in a nearby bush. We were surprised to find the baby alive. She suffered minor bruises.”

Sohini was taken to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared her safe. She has been handed over to her grandfather Dipendu Thursday morning.
