Umpires Asad Rauf and Daryll Harper inspected the ground conditions with the light-meter and did not find it fit for play.

The toss was delayed too.

Play had originally been scheduled to start at 9.30 a.m. and the toss was to be held at 9 a.m. but that did not happen.

Overcast conditions and strong winds prevailed as players from both teams continued warming up and practise in the ground.

The Indians go into the match with a team unchanged from the one that won the first Test in Chennai. England have made one change, with Stuart Broad replacing Steve Harmison.
